PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The learning Disabilities Association of Western New York offers various Professional Development Sessions to those who serve adults, families and children in the Western New York region.  The sessions are specifically tailored to meet the professionals' need and directly provides training in the areas of learning disabilities provides training in the areas of learning disabilities, developmental disabilities and neurological impairments.  All sessions are led by a qualified trainer with expertise in the topic areas.

Disability Awareness Trainings consist of the following topics:

Learning Disabilities - Reading Disorders

Specific learning disabilities including dyslexia, dysgraphia, discalculia

Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD)

Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)

Tourettes Syndrome

Non-Verbal Learning Disability

Genetic Disorders and their relationship to Learning Disabilities

Mental Health and Learning Disabilities

Training curriculums for Educational Information include:

The Committee on Special Education (CSE) process in the school districts - The focus of this session is an overview of the special education process and the importance of parental rights.

Individual Education Plan (IEP) development for children involved in the special education environment - This session provides techniques to designing an appropriate IEP within the framework of the New York State Education Laws Part 200 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations.
Reading Educational Records - Provides perspective to understanding evaluations and their importance to IEP development.
The Parent Perspective
Maintaining your child's records

Sessions addressing Adults with Disabilities include:

Transition Services and Independent Living

Assistive technology and the role of accommodation, modifications and strategies in the workplace and classroom.

Legal rights according to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Workforce Investment Act (WIA)

Learning Disabilities and their impact on the Adult Service Delivery System

Screening and Assessment of learning disabilities in adults to better understand the process of diagnosis
